A mother came to see me last week about her 9 years son who can't read a word. Though I have not seen him, I took a little bit of history and was almost certain that there is certain learning difficulty that causing a rather intelligent boy not able to read at 9 years old. From what I gathered from his mom, I suspected he is dyslexic or maybe also has attention deficit.
Today, I met him for an evaluation and started the first lesson with him. Before the lesson, I asked him to read me the words that I have on the cards, simple words like : go, man, jam, to, sit,..... He couldn't read any of them!
Then, I taught him the letter sounds of the 26 letters, he seemed to pick up really fast. Then, we did a little of phonemic awareness exercises, he did extremely well in isolating the initial sounds and final sounds, but have a little trouble hearing the vowel sounds.
Since he was condemned so much by his school teachers and has rather low self esteem, I thought I want to boast his self esteem a little first, so I gave him about twenty CVC words i.e. rat, cat, pin, sun,...., he was able to sound out the letters perfectly, and then we went ahead to blend the letter sounds. I can see the light bulb turned on for him, he just went on reading all the words that I gave him and was very excited.
I think this kind of children are the ones that make my teaching career so satisfying, I felt like I have saved another starfish, by throwing it back to the sea!
